Why Samsung and LG In Door Ice Makers Freeze Up

Ice buildup in the door ice room is one of the most frequent calls on French door refrigerators. Here is why it happens, how to clear it and how to stop it coming back.

French door refrigerators from Samsung and LG are popular in newer Rochester homes, and many put the ice maker in the left fresh food door instead of the freezer. That design saves freezer space, but it means the ice maker lives in a small insulated compartment, often called the ice room or ice compartment, that is kept below freezing by cold air ducted up from the freezer. When warm, humid air leaks into that compartment, frost forms, ice clumps, the bucket jams and ice production stops.

We see this every week, especially in summer when kitchens are humid and doors open more often. This guide explains the causes, how to clear the ice safely and which repairs actually stop the problem from returning.

Quick answer: why does my in door ice maker keep freezing?

Warm air leaking into the ice room, usually through a worn or misaligned ice room seal or door gasket, causes frost that jams the ice maker. A failing ice room fan, a water inlet valve that drips, low water pressure and a door left ajar also cause freeze ups. Clearing the ice fixes it for days or weeks; replacing the failed seal, fan or valve fixes it for good.

How an in door ice maker stays cold

Cold air from the freezer travels through a duct in the cabinet wall to a port that lines up with the ice room when the door closes. A small fan pushes that air across the ice mold. The ice room has its own cover and gasket that keep warm fresh food air out. Water reaches the ice maker through a fill tube that runs into the door. Any gap in that sealed path lets moisture in, and moisture becomes frost.

How to clear a frozen ice maker

  1. 1

    Turn off the ice maker

Use the control panel or ice maker switch so it does not try to harvest while you work.

  2. 2

    Remove the ice bucket

Pull the bucket out and empty it into the sink. If it is frozen in place, do not force it.

  3. 3

    Melt the ice

Use a hair dryer on low held at a safe distance, or towels soaked in warm water. Never use a knife or screwdriver to chip ice.

  4. 4

    Dry everything

Wipe the ice room, the bucket and the area around the chute completely dry so new frost does not form immediately.

  5. 5

    Inspect the seals

Look for tears, flattened spots or a cover that does not sit flat.

  6. 6

    Restart and wait

Reinstall the bucket, turn the ice maker on and allow about 24 hours for a full first harvest.

Some Samsung and LG models have a forced defrost or ice room defrost mode in the service menu, and Samsung has released updated ice room parts for some models over the years. A technician can tell whether your model has a known update.

Prevent repeat freeze ups

  • Close the left door firmly and make sure it is level with the right door
  • Do not overfill door bins; heavy bins can make the door sag and break the seal
  • Change the water filter every six months
  • Keep the freezer at 0°F and the fresh food section at 37°F
  • Wipe frost from the ice room cover when you see it rather than letting it build
  • Run a dehumidifier in very humid summer kitchens

When to call a technician

If ice builds up again within a few days of clearing it, a part has failed. We check the ice room fan and its voltage, the condition of the ice room and door seals, the water inlet valve for slow drips and water pressure at the valve. We also look at the freezer duct, because a defrost problem in the freezer can send frost up to the ice room. Most of these repairs are completed in one visit.

Hard water and ice makers in Rochester

Rochester's hard water adds a second problem: minerals build up inside the inlet valve and fill tube, which reduces water flow and can cause small, hollow cubes that stick together. A fresh filter every six months and a descaled ice mold help. Compare with our Frigidaire ice crusher repair in Byron, where mineral residue made the flap stick.

What we check on an ice maker freeze up call

We start by looking at where the ice forms. Frost on the ice room cover and door gasket points to a sealing problem. Clear ice on the fill tube or the edge of the mold points to a water valve that drips after it should close. Soft, clumped ice with weak airflow points to the ice room fan. We test the fan motor and its voltage, measure water pressure at the inlet valve and check the freezer air port for frost that would mean a defrost problem upstream.

We then clear the ice room completely, replace the failed part and run a harvest to confirm the ice maker fills, freezes and drops cubes normally. Most freeze up repairs are finished in one visit.

Water filters and ice quality

Use the filter made for your model. Poor fitting or low quality filters can restrict flow, which leads to small cubes that freeze together. After a filter change, run a few glasses of water through the dispenser and discard the first batch of ice.

Common questions

Why does my ice maker keep freezing up?

Warm air leaking into the ice room, a leaking water valve or a failed ice room fan cause repeat freeze ups.

How long does an ice maker take to make ice after defrosting?

Usually 24 hours for the first full harvest.

Can I just turn off the in door ice maker?

Yes. Turning it off and emptying the bucket avoids freeze ups if you do not use much ice, and the fridge works normally.

Is a freezing ice maker covered by warranty?

It depends on the model and age. Check your manufacturer warranty; some parts on some models have longer coverage.

Does a cheap water filter affect the ice maker?

It can. Poor fitting or restrictive filters lower water flow, which causes small cubes that stick together and jam the bucket.
