Bosch dishwashers are one of the most common dishwashers in Rochester kitchens, and E15 is the code owners ask us about most. The good news is that E15 is a protection feature doing its job. The bad news is that it will keep coming back until the source of the water is found.
This guide explains what the code means, the safe way to clear it, how to trace the leak and the most common failed parts we find on Bosch dishwashers, along with the related drain codes E24 and E25.
Quick answer: what does Bosch E15 mean?
E15 means water has collected in the base pan under the tub. A foam float in the pan rises, triggers a switch, and the dishwasher stops filling and runs the drain pump to protect your floor. The water came from a leak above it, often from too many suds, a loose hose connection, a worn pump seal or a cracked part. Drying the pan clears the code; fixing the leak stops it returning.
How Bosch leak protection works
Most Bosch dishwashers sit in a sealed plastic base pan. Anything that drips inside the machine, from a hose, pump, valve or seal, collects in that pan instead of on your floor. A small styrofoam float sits in the pan above a microswitch. When water lifts the float, the switch tells the control to stop the cycle and pump out. Some models also have an anti flood inlet hose that shuts off water at the faucet end. That is why E15 often appears with the dishwasher refusing to start or beeping.
Common sources of the leak
| Source | Clue | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Too much detergent or dish soap | Suds in the tub, leak during wash | Rinse out suds, use correct detergent |
| Circulation or heat pump seal | Leak during wash, water under the sump | Replace pump or seal |
| Loose inlet or drain hose connection | Drip at a hose clamp | Tighten or replace clamp and hose |
| Cracked spray arm or water distribution tube | Water sprays out of the tub edges | Replace the part |
| Door gasket or seal | Drip at the front corners | Replace gasket |
| Water inlet valve | Drip at the valve when filling | Replace inlet valve |
In Rochester, hard water adds wear: mineral buildup on seals and spray arms can make parts stick or crack. Our guide to white film and hard water covers how to reduce scale.
How to fix E15 safely
- 1
Turn off power and water
Switch off the dishwasher breaker and close the water supply valve under the sink.
- 2
Check for suds
Open the door. If the tub is full of foam, someone may have used dish soap. Rinse the suds out with cold water and a little vinegar.
- 3
Remove the kick plate
Unscrew the toe kick panel at the bottom and look into the base pan with a flashlight.
- 4
Dry the base pan
Soak up water with towels or a shop vacuum. Drying the pan resets the float.
- 5
Run a test cycle and watch
Leave the kick plate off, restore power and water, run a rinse cycle and watch underneath with a flashlight. Note when and where water appears.
- 6
Call if water returns
If water collects again, a part is leaking and needs repair.
Related Bosch codes: E24 and E25
E24 and E25 are drain codes. E24 usually points to a blocked drain hose, a clogged filter or a garbage disposal knockout plug that was never removed. E25 usually points to something stuck in the drain pump, such as glass, a lemon seed or a fruit label. Clean the filter, check the hose and look for the pump cover under the filter area, which on many Bosch models can be popped off to clear debris.
| Code | Meaning | First check |
|---|---|---|
| E15 | Water in base pan (leak protection) | Suds, hoses, pump seal |
| E24 | Drain problem | Filter, drain hose, disposal plug |
| E25 | Drain pump blocked | Debris under the pump cover |
| E09 | Heating problem on many models | Heat pump or heater |
What a Bosch E15 repair visit involves
We pull the dishwasher partly out if needed, run it with the base exposed and watch for the exact drip point. We check pump seals, hose clamps, the inlet valve and the sump. On many Bosch models the circulation pump is combined with the heater, so a leaking heat pump is replaced as one assembly. We finish by drying the pan, confirming the float moves freely and running a full cycle with no water in the base.
Preventing E15
- Only use dishwasher detergent, never dish soap or laundry detergent
- Clean the filter monthly so water drains freely
- Check that spray arms turn freely and are not cracked
- Use rinse aid and descale in hard water
- Have a loose or leaking hose fixed right away
Bosch anti flood hoses and the float switch
Many Bosch dishwashers use an AquaStop or anti flood inlet hose. It has a valve at the faucet end that closes if the hose itself leaks. If the dishwasher will not fill at all after an E15 and you see no water in the base pan, the anti flood valve may have tripped and the hose needs to be replaced as a unit. Do not cut or bypass it; it is part of the leak protection system.
The float switch can also stick. If the pan is completely dry but E15 stays on, the foam float may be stuck in the raised position by debris or scale. A technician can free it and test the switch with a meter. It is rare for the switch itself to fail, so we always check for a hidden leak first.
Bosch models we see most in Rochester
The 100, 300, 500, 800 and Benchmark series all use the same basic leak protection design, so the steps in this guide apply across them. Model numbers start with SHE, SHP, SHX, SHS or SHV and are printed on a label along the edge of the inner door.

Common questions
Can I keep using my Bosch with E15?
No. The dishwasher will not run normally, and the leak can damage your floor or cabinet.
What do Bosch E24 and E25 mean?
Both point to drain problems: a clogged filter, drain hose or disposal plug for E24, and a blocked drain pump for E25.
Why did E15 come back after I dried the pan?
Because the leak is still there. Drying the pan only resets the float; the leaking part must be found and repaired.
Does dish soap cause E15?
Yes. Dish soap creates heavy foam that overflows the tub and fills the base pan.
My Bosch will not fill and shows no water in the pan. Why?
The anti flood inlet hose may have tripped its safety valve, or the float may be stuck. Both need inspection before the dishwasher will run.
