LG Washer OE Error Code: What It Means and How to Fix It

OE means the washer could not drain in time. Most of the time the fix is a 10 minute filter clean. Here is the full checklist, plus what other LG codes mean.

Technician checking an LG front load washer showing an OE error

LG washers are everywhere in Rochester's newer neighborhoods, and OE is the code we are asked about most. OE stands for an outlet or drain error: the washer tried to pump the water out and could not finish within the time it allows. The washer stops, the door stays locked while water remains in the drum, and the display shows OE.

The good news is that OE is usually a blockage you can clear yourself. This guide covers the causes in order of likelihood, step by step fixes for front load and top load LG washers, the other common LG codes and when it is time to call a technician.

Quick answer: how do I fix OE on an LG washer?

Unplug the washer, drain the water through the small emergency drain tube behind the lower front panel, then unscrew and clean the drain pump filter. Check that the drain hose is not kinked or pushed too far into the standpipe. Run a rinse and spin. If OE returns with a clean filter and clear hose, the drain pump has likely failed.

Fixing OE on an LG front load washer

  1. 1

    Unplug and prepare

Unplug the washer, close the water faucets and lay towels in front of the lower panel. Have a shallow pan ready.

  2. 2

    Open the lower access cover

It is on the lower left front of most LG front loaders.

  3. 3

    Drain with the emergency tube

Pull out the small tube, remove its cap over the pan and let the water drain. Empty the pan as needed.

  4. 4

    Remove the filter

Turn the round filter counterclockwise and pull it out. Expect some remaining water.

  5. 5

    Clean filter and pump opening

Remove lint, hair, coins and small items, and check that the impeller behind it turns freely.

  6. 6

    Reassemble and test

Screw the filter in tightly, recap the tube, plug in and run Rinse and Spin.

Fixing OE on an LG top load washer

Many LG top loaders have no user filter. Check the drain hose first, then the standpipe. Small items can still reach the pump through the drum; if the pump hums but water does not move, a sock or bra wire may be lodged in it. Some models allow access to the pump from the back panel, but on most top loaders this is a job for a technician.

Other common LG washer codes

CodeMeaningUsual cause
OEDrain errorFilter, hose or pump
UEUnbalanced loadUneven load; worn shock absorbers if repeated
IEWater inlet errorClosed faucet, kinked fill hose, clogged inlet screens
LEMotor lockedOverload or a motor or sensor fault
dEDoor lock errorDoor not closed, latch or lock assembly
FEOverfillInlet valve or pressure sensor
tCLTub clean reminderRun the tub clean cycle

Codes vary slightly by model, so confirm in your owner's manual. A tCL reminder is not a fault; running a tub clean cycle monthly helps prevent odors and drain clogs.

OE in a Minnesota winter

If your washer is in an unheated garage, mudroom or lake cabin, the drain hose and even the pump can freeze. The washer then shows OE on the first load of a cold morning. Warm the space and wait before trying again, and never pour boiling water into the pump area. Keeping laundry areas above freezing prevents this and protects the pump.

When the drain pump has failed

If OE keeps returning with a clean filter, a clear hose and a working house drain, the pump motor is the likely failure. Signs include a hum with no water movement or no sound at all during the drain portion. A technician confirms by checking for voltage at the pump during drain and testing the pump's resistance. LG drain pumps are a common repair and usually completed in one visit.

Preventing OE

  • Empty pockets and use mesh bags for small items
  • Clean the pump filter every three to four months
  • Use 1 to 2 tablespoons of HE detergent, not more
  • Run the Tub Clean cycle monthly
  • Keep the drain hose properly secured and the laundry area above freezing

What happens when we repair an LG drain error

On a service call we drain the drum safely, clean the filter and then run the washer's test mode, which lets us turn the drain pump on directly. We measure voltage at the pump while it should be running. Voltage with no pumping means the pump is bad; no voltage points to wiring or the main control. We also inspect the hose route, check the standpipe height and look for foam caused by too much detergent, which can trigger drain errors on its own.

LG front load washers in Rochester's newer homes are often installed in closets or on pedestals. We protect floors and trim when pulling the washer out and reset it level afterward, since an unlevel washer leads to UE codes and extra wear on the shock absorbers.

Smart diagnosis

Many LG washers support Smart Diagnosis through the LG ThinQ app or by holding the phone to the washer. It can confirm the error history, which is helpful to share with your technician.

Common questions

How do I reset an LG washer OE error?

Clear the cause first, then unplug the washer for a few minutes. The code clears when the washer drains normally.

Can cold weather cause OE?

Yes. A drain hose that freezes in an unheated space stops drainage. Keep laundry areas above freezing.

Why won't my LG washer door open after OE?

The door stays locked while water is in the drum. Drain through the emergency tube and filter, and the door unlocks shortly after.

Is OE covered by the LG warranty?

A failed pump may be, depending on age. A clogged filter is maintenance and is not a warranty defect.

Can too much detergent cause OE?

Yes. Excess suds can slow draining and trigger OE or a suds warning. Use only HE detergent and the recommended amount.
